estancia cristina in Patagonia

After visiting nearly 45 countries, when people ask me about my favorite place, my answer is always the same: Estancia Cristina. Even two years later, and despite travels to incredible destinations like French Polynesia, Thailand, Singapore, France and Spain, this property is one I genuinely dream about returning to at least once a week.

Accessible only by private boat, this remote and extraordinary lodge is an absolute must-see when visiting El Calafate.

Getting there

While this all-inclusive experience comes with a premium price tag (more on that below), the team truly handles every detail from the moment they pick you up in El Calafate.

Your journey begins at the El Calafate Airport (FTE), about 14 miles from town and a 20-30 minute drive. From there, the logistics team whisks you away on a roughly 45-minute drive to Puerto Bandera, where you board a large boat for a scenic three-hour cruise across Lago Argentino, taking in breathtaking views of the Upsala Glacier and surrounding ice formations. For those pressed for time—or seeking a bit more adrenaline—a direct 45-minute speedboat ride is also an option. That said, truthfully: this scenic cruise was easily one of the standout experiences of our entire two-week journey through Argentina.

Given the early start (around 7:30 a.m.) and limited flight schedules, Estancia Cristina recommends staying in El Calafate the night before your visit (and again the day you leave Estancia Cristina) so you don’t have to rush at either end. We stayed at Los Ponchos Hotel (highly recommend!) and spent the previous morning exploring El Calafate: flying in, renting a car, and visiting the panoramic viewpoint at Perito Moreno Glacier before embarking on our estancia adventure.

Once you disembark, a fleet of trucks is waiting to drive you and other fellow guests through the rugged Patagonian terrain to your temporary home for the next 30 hours.

Rooms & Design

The property is composed of five charming casas — Montaña, Estepa, Bosque, Río, and Familia — arranged around the main lodge, where meals are shared. Each casa houses four private suites, each featuring a bow window that frames sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness, offering guests a rare chance to feel intimately connected to the raw beauty of Patagonia.

Set in a glacier-carved valley, the lodge is naturally sheltered from the wind, yet the surrounding lakes, mountains, and vast landscapes remain ever-present through panoramic windows, allowing the stunning scenery to become part of your stay.

Food & Drinks

Dining at Estancia Cristina is as much about the setting as it is about the food. Meals are served in the main lodge, where panoramic windows frame the glacier-carved valley, rugged mountains, and shimmering lakes, making every meal a visual feast as well as a culinary one.

It was during this two-week trip to Argentina that I fell in love with Malbec, and Estancia Cristina’s wine list was no exception. Thoughtfully curated, it showcases both local favorites and premium selections, perfectly complementing the regionally inspired cuisine. From Patagonian lamb and fresh trout to seasonal fruits and artisanal breads, every dish reflects the flavors of the region.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and all beverages are included in your stay, often presented in tasting menus that highlight local ingredients and traditional recipes with a refined twist. For days spent exploring the surrounding glaciers and valleys, the lodge also provides packed lunches, ensuring you’re fueled for every adventure.

Standout Moments

At one point, my fiancé (now husband) and I looked at each other and said, “I don’t think it’s ever going to get better than this.” That said, every moment of this experience honestly felt like a standout. From the breathtaking cruise across Lago Argentino at the start of our stay, to the decadent cuisine at the lodge, to a full-day hike to Mirador Lago Guillermo, each experience was unforgettable. Even confronting my mild fear of horses and riding through the Patagonian water rapids became a thrilling highlight. Every adventure, every meal, every view left us in awe—and we loved every minute of it.

Booking details

Let’s talk pricing. Due to Estancia Cristina’s remote location, inclusivity and unique access deep inside Los Glaciares National Park, prices vary depending on the number of guests per room and the length of your stay. At the time of publishing, for example, a room shared by two people starts at $1,600 per person for one night and rises to $2,970 per person for a three-night stay.

Final thoughts

In case it wasn’t totally obvious, I’m a big fan of Estancia Cristina. The combination of remote wilderness, luxurious accommodations, and carefully curated experiences makes it feel like a once-in-a-lifetime escape. You step off the boat, the crisp Patagonian air hits you, goosebumps rise, and you realize just how remarkably lucky you are to be standing in this seemingly untouched corner of the world. It’s a place that makes you pause, breathe it all in, and feel completely present in the moment.

Yes, it comes with a premium price tag, but the seamless logistics, comfort, and immersive connection to the landscape make it worth every dollar. If you’re looking to disconnect, explore Patagonia in a unique way, and create memories that linger long after you leave, Estancia Cristina is an experience that truly delivers.
