La Valise Tulum
When it comes to Mexico’s must-visit destinations, Tulum sits at the very top of the list. Much like New York’s Montauk, which started as a quiet fishing town, Tulum was once a charming, low-key getaway where locals would escape for long weekends—long before it became the hotspot we know today.
It wasn’t until the early 2000s that Tulum began transforming into the scene that now dominates your Instagram feed. Its irresistible mix of powdery beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, a vibrant culinary scene, colorful nightlife, and relaxed bohemian energy draws A-list celebrities, influencers, and travelers alike. While often nicknamed “the Ibiza of Mexico,” Tulum is far more than a party destination. Nestled among the bustling beach clubs and high-end restaurants are some of the world’s most exceptional boutique hotels—places that offer a serene and unforgettable stay along the Caribbean Sea.
One standout example: La Valise Tulum.
Atmosphere & Locale
La Valise captures the essence of Tulum’s chic, bohemian spirit. Nestled along the southern stretch of Tulum’s hotel zone, the property sits where lush jungle meets the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Its intimate, design-forward villas offer a tranquil escape from the lively beach clubs and nightlife just minutes away, making it the perfect blend of seclusion and access.
The hotel embodies relaxed sophistication: handcrafted interiors, breezy open-air spaces, and ocean views that captivate at every glance.

Rooms & Design
The adults-only, luxury hotel is made up of 22 villas, split between both sides of the jungle and beach — giving you the option to sleep in a private suite cocooned with lush forest leaves or a beachfront bungalow, overlooking the sparkling sea.
Suites are defined by light, airy spaces with creamy white walls and linen‑soft textiles that allow the surrounding landscape to take center stage. Handcrafted elements—from woven‑reed lamps and carved wooden furnishings to pieces by Mexican artisans—bringing texture and soul to every corner, blending rustic, organic materials like wood, stone, and mimbre with thoughtful, modern comfort. Each room feels intimate yet open, a seamless continuation of Tulum’s bohemian spirit and tranquil beauty.
For a sleepover under the stars, make sure to book one of the five beachside suites that come with wheeled king-size beds, which can be rolled onto your private terrace. You can also reserve the Oasis master suite, which overlooks the property’s private cenote. Most of the jungle-side rooms have private terraces and outdoor soaking tubs.
Amenities & Experiences
During your stay, guests can enjoy a dip in one of two pools or a salty refresh in the ocean, of course. Plus, La Valise Tulum also offers many unique, spiritual and relaxing experiences you can purchase for an extra cost. Offerings range from a lunar ceremony which featured a nighttime massage under the moon to bee venom facials at the spa.

Food & Drink
While La Valise Tulum emphasizes relaxation, its culinary offerings are equally exceptional. Organic meals are served at the hotel’s Michelin-listed restaurant, Nü, with many fair-trade ingredients sourced from the local farm Mestiza de Indias, which preserves ancient Mayan farming techniques.
For a more intimate experience, the hotel can arrange exclusive dinners on your private deck or terrace. Mezcal enthusiasts can participate in a tasting workshop, exploring both the flavors and the story behind this iconic agave spirit.
Plus, guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast at the oceanfront restaurant, featuring gourmet coffee, fresh juice, fruit, yogurt, and full entrées such as shrimp tacos or huevos rancheros — also available for room service upon request.
Standout moments
Dinner at Nü was was exceptional. The candlelit jungle setting created an intimate, almost magical atmosphere, while the flavorful cocktails and locally sourced ingredients elevated every bite. Our favorites on the menu included the hamachi, chargrilled carrots, octopus, and short ribs—each dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavor.
The interior design at La Valise was equally remarkable. Every detail felt intentional, from the handcrafted furniture to the artful use of natural materials, blending seamlessly with the surrounding jungle and ocean views. It’s truly one of the most stunning hotels I’ve ever stayed in, where luxury meets thoughtful, organic design.
Booking Details
Rates at La Valise Tulum start around $390 and can climb as high as $800 during peak months. Consider booking in well in advance to get the best possible rate and to avoid rainy weather book anytime from November to May.
Final Thoughts
Even after two years and plenty of other hotel stays in between, La Valise Tulum is one of the rare places that truly left a mark. From its seamless access to both ocean and jungle, to its proximity to some of the world’s best restaurants, and its striking architecture, every detail combined to create an experience I’ll never forget.
